Chapter eighteen

I don’t remember falling asleep in Ansel’s arms, but I do remember being surrounded by an all-encompassing warmth as I slept. When I woke up the next morning though, I was alone, and the room was cold. Colder than normal, almost draftier like someone had left the window open all night. The room was dark, still too damn early to even think about waking up, and I was ready to pull the blanket over my head and roll over when I noticed someone standing in front of the window. The opened window.

“Ansel?! What are you doing!” I practically shouted at him like I had caught him about to jump out of said window.

He stood with his back to the rest of the room. He knew. There was no way he didn’t know. Oh Goddess, I was such a fool thinking I could pull off this escape—

But when he turned around, he didn’t look angry, only surprised. “Gods, Skye, I’m just having a smoke,” he said around the lit cigarette hanging from his lips. “You alright? You look as white as that sheet you’re clutching.”

I couldn’t speak. Not yet anyways. All I could do was focus on my fast breathing and thumping heart. “Y-yeah, sorry. I don’t know why I screamed; it looked like you were doing something else.”

He watched me through narrowed slits as he took a long drag of his cigarette, angling his head away as he blew the smoke out of the open window. “What did it look like I was doing, Skye?” There was so much implied in his tone, there was no way he didn’t know about the bars. They were barely hanging on by one screw—you had to be blind not to notice. And though it was too early for much sunlight, there was enough visibility for Ansel to see five inches in front of his face.

Then why wasn’t he calling me out? I didn’t know him very well, but he didn’t seem like the type to beat around the bush.

“Nothing,” I said after a long, awkward pause where Ansel didn’t take his eyes off me. “Sorry, I guess I’m not used to seeing you in the morning. You just startled me. You’re always gone before I wake up. Do you smoke every morning?”

He stomped his cigarette out on the side of the window before crossing the small space from the window to the bed. “Every morning. Some people need a fresh cup of coffee to wake up, I need fresh smoke in my lungs.” He knelt next to the bed, so our eyes were level. It was unfair how good he looked this morning. The skin under his eyes was slightly darker than normal and a few random hairs stuck out from the bun tied loosely at his nape, but besides that, you would have never been able to guess this orc had stayed up most of the night drinking his weight in beer.

I, on the other hand, knew I looked like I
